The Miami Hurricanes (18-11, 7-9) closed the season with an impressive win over fellow Atlantic Coast Conference rival North Carolina State (16-13, 6-10) on Saturday, 72-64. Senior guard Jack McClinton came through with 24 points at home on senior day, cementing one of the most storied careers in Hurricane basketball history.

With the win, Miami kept their slim hopes for making the 65-team NCAA tournament alive. Miami will open the ACC tournament as the #9 seed where they will meet #8 seed Virginia Tech in Atlanta’s Georgia Dome beginning March 12th. Should they win, they would take on North Carolina who holds the top seed in a second round match up. The Hurricanes likely need at least two wins if not a tournament title in order to get into the “big dance.”

Should they earn an at-large tournament invitation, it would be the second consecutive for the Hurricanes, coached by Frank Haith. If they fall short, Miami will be a sure bet for the post season playing in the National Invitation Tournament with an opportunity to host an opening round game.

This basketball season began with lofty expectations because of the return of a veteran squad who played well in the post season last year. However, the expectations were not realized and now the Hurricanes are trying to salvage a season where they let so many close games get away including three overtime losses to Duke, N.C. State and Virginia Tech.
