SEASON IN REVIEW: HURRICANES END SEASON WITH AN NIT LOSS

The Miami Hurricanes Basketball season of brilliant inconsistency is over. A very talented team ranked #17 in preseason polls completed the season with a record of (19-13), well shy of expectations of returning to the NCAA Tournament. Last week’s NIT loss to the University of Florida, a 74-60 derailment, was the second lowest offensive output of the season for the Hurricanes.

NIT: IMPRESSIVE OPENING ROUND WIN

Miami came into the post season and proved they belonged with an impressive win over Providence on Wednesday night in the opening round of the National Invitation Tournament. Jack McClinton paced the Hurricanes with 25 points and Lance Hurdle added 12 points in the 78-66 thumping of Providence on their home court.

MIAMI NIT BOUND, TOUGH FIRST ROUND DRAW

Miami (18-12) will try to put a positive spin on a disappointing season when it travels to Providence to play in the first round of the National Invitation Tournament Wednesday.

DEFLATING LOSS, HURRICANES NIT BOUND

The post season got off to a rough start for the Miami Hurricanes. Thursday’s 65-47 loss to Virgina Tech was the second loss to the Hookies this season. It’s disappointing because with a solid run in the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament, underway this week at Atlanta’s Georgia Dome, the Hurricanes could have squeaked out a birth in the NCAA Tournament.

HURRICANES WIN SEASON FINALE

The Miami Hurricanes (18-11, 7-9) closed the season with an impressive win over fellow Atlantic Coast Conference rival North Carolina State (16-13, 6-10) on Saturday, 72-64. Senior guard Jack McClinton came through with 24 points at home on senior day, cementing one of the most storied careers in Hurricane basketball history.

With the win, Miami kept their slim hopes for making the 65-team NCAA tournament alive. Miami will open the ACC tournament as the #9 seed where they will meet #8 seed Virginia Tech in Atlanta’s Georgia Dome beginning March 12th. Should they win, they would take on North Carolina who holds the top seed in a second round match up. The Hurricanes likely need at least two wins if not a tournament title in order to get into the “big dance.”

Should they earn an at-large tournament invitation, it would be the second consecutive for the Hurricanes,

YELLOW JACKET’S BUZZ BURST HURRICANE’S BUBBLE

The Miami Hurricanes needed to win its final four home games to get a realistic chance at making the NCAA Tournament. They fell well short of that on Wednesday night, losing to the worst team in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets beat Miami handily on their home floor in Atlanta, GA, 78-68 on senior night.

Georgia Tech jumped out early leading the Hurricanes by 16 points at the half. They were led in scoring by senior Lewis Clinch who had 30, a career high in his last game at home. Clinch was absolutely on fire from the three point line sinking 9 of 16 three-point attempts. His stellar play gave the Yellow Jackets their first win since January 31st when they shocked Wake Forrest.

As for Miami, the dim hopes of making the NCAA Tournament were likely put out after the loss. Star guard Jack McClinton only managed 13 points and the Hurricanes were led i

CANES GET KEY WIN AT VIRGINA

There is no doubt that the Miami Hurricanes (currently 17-10, 6-8) have much work to do if they are to finish the season with four straight wins and gain a (19-10, 8-8) record. However, they took the second step toward reaching that goal on Thursday night on the road against the Virginia Cavaliers with a 62-55 win.

The 19-10 mark, coupled with at least one Atlantic Coast Conference tournament win would make a compelling case for Miami to receive an at-large NCAA Tournament bid. The Hurricanes boast notable wins over #14 Wake Forrest, #25 Florida State, two wins over Boston College and a win on the road at Kentucky. All four of those teams figure to be heading to the tournament.

An encouraging sign in the win over Virginia is how it happened. Miami was able to use defense via tough zone play to overcome a quiet night from senior stud Jack McClinton. He finished the game with only 11 poin

FOOTBALL: SPRING PRACTICE OPENS, QB POSITION IS SET BUT STAR RECURIT SAGA CONTINUES

Miami Hurricane Football Coach Randy Shannon is focused. He has to be. He’s coming into a season where the expectations for his third year at the helm of one of the nation’s most historic college football teams will be sky high. Fueling those expectations are a combination of factors that many say have hampered his teams on the field performance. However, this season those excuses go away. And the fresh start begins with spring practice beginning today.

This off season has been a whirlwind for Miami. The team welcomes in a new offensive coordinator in the name of Mark Whipple, former offensive assistant with the Philadelphia Eagles. Whipple takes the place of former coordinator Patrick Nix. Nix was often accused of not letting the leash off of what many thought could be an explosive offense. He also held a close relationship with former Hurricane Robert Marve, whose transfer was announced du

CANES KNOCK OFF BC, GREAT SHOOTING FROM BEHIND THE ARCH

A win to snap a three game losing streak and to keep slim hopes of returning to the NCAA tournament is just what the doctor ordered for the Miami Hurricanes. Saturday afternoon, they picked up their subscription and took their medicine. The dosage called for three point baskets and the Hurricanes responded with a season high 11 3-pointers for the game. The incredible 55% the team shot from behind the arch fueled a key win against Boston College, 69-58 at home.

Jack McClinton led all Hurricane scorers with a 22 point outing. He was assisted by strong outings from fellow starters James Dews and Brian Asbury scoring 14 and 12 points respectively. Overall, the Hurricanes shot an impressive 52% from the field giving them great offensive output, the first since their route of Wake Forrest on February 4th. Boston College’s star Tyrese Rice, a close friend of McClinton’s, was held to just 11 points.
